The A684 from Leyburn to Hawes takes you through some delightful villages and many places of interest. Bolton Castle, founded after 1378, stands out on the northern side of Wensleydale and further up the Dale Aysgarth Falls can be found. (Upper Falls shown below right). Both are well worth a walk around.

The village of Askrigg is also very picturesque. The makers of the T.V. series to James Herriot’s ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ used the village, and much of the the surrounding countryside for their filming. It was this series that put the North Yorkshire Dales firmly on the tourist’s map.

The two waterfalls pictured above are (left) Hardraw Force, behind the Church in Hardraw, which is a 10 minute walk from Pry House Farm, and (right) Aysgarth Falls. Both of these waterfalls were used by the makers of ‘Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves’, as a backdrop for Kevin Costner. Can you believe he showered under the Hardraw Force?, we think it must have been a stunt double! At the top end of this the ‘Upper’of Aysgarth Falls, it is quite flat and reasonably shallow, and it is there that ‘Robin Hood’ and ‘Little John’ had their fight using staffs.
